Driver's Lounge - Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) 2010 Safety Measurement System (SMS)

What is CSA 2010?

It is a new DOT program to improve large truck safety and reduce crashes.

Why is CSA 2010 being implemented?

Over the last few years, the rate of crash reduction has slowed prompting DOT to take a new look at monitoring carrier safety.

Who will be monitored?

CMV drivers and motor carriers will be evaluated for safety fitness.

What areas will be monitored and evaluated?

Drivers and carriers will be evaluated under 7 categories, which are unsafe driving, fatigued driving (hours of service), driver fitness, drug and alcohol, vehicle maintenance, cargo securement and crash history.

Will there be a score card kept on the driver?

Yes, each individual driver will have a score card that evaluates each driver from 1 to 100. With 100 being the worst score and zero the best.

Will the points on the score card affect my CMV license?

The points for CSA scoring system are separate from the points that you receive for traffic violations that go on your MVR through the Department of Motor Vehicle point system.

When will CSA 2010 start?

Technically it has already begun collecting your data from the Roadside Inspections and any crashes you have had for the last two years that will be used to calculate your scoring starting next year.

What will happen if my score gets too high?

There will be different thresholds that evaluate your performance. For example: as long as you are under 40 points you are satisfactory. Between 40 and 75 you would receive a warning letter and over 75 is out of compliance and the DOT will contact you to determine sanctions as fines or out of service letters depending on how many of the 7 categories you are deficient.
